New York faces challenges with several invasive aquatic plants, including Eurasian Watermilfoil and Water Chestnut. These plants can disrupt local ecosystems, out-compete native vegetation, and impair recreational water use.
New York Benthic Barriers Restrictions and Guidelines
To use benthic barriers in New York, property owners must adhere to the following guidelines:
- Permit Requirement: The DEC requires a permit for benthic barrier installation via the Joint Application Form. It falls under General Permit GP-0-21-004. For additional help, you can access the Joint Application Form Instructions and the Joint Application Form.
- Authorized Use Period: Barriers can be used from July 1 to October 31.
- Area Restrictions: Usage is limited to designated areas, such as freshwater wetlands, protected streams, and navigable waters. Your waterfront is permissible.
- Barrier Specifications: Barriers must be either gas permeable or have a gas venting method incorporated in the barrier, and anchored appropriately.
Environmental Considerations For New York
The use of benthic barriers is subject to environmental considerations to protect the aquatic ecosystem:
- Avoiding coverage of spawning beds.
- Ensuring barriers are removed after the authorized period.
- Preventing the use of lake bed stones for anchoring.
